What is ACO®?

ACO® is an Active Catalytic Oxidiser that works by harnessing the natural energy of UV light from the sun to catalyse the formation of free radicals to increase the RedOx potential in the water. Free radicals are the active ingredients of ozone. They oxidise just like chlorine to remove pollutants
but do not form noxious disinfection by-products. ACO® is not consumed in the process, it just makes what happens naturally much more efficient. In chlorinated systems ACO® also protects chlorine from photolysis by sunlight and makes it last three times longer in outdoor facilities. ACO®
does the same as cyanuric acid, but instead of reducing oxidation capacity, ACO® increases the oxidation potential of the water.

Your advantages at a glance

  • Fish-Friendly Water Treatment – with ACO®bio for all outdoor biological systems.
  • Clearer water – Catalysis of natural UV oxidation of organics in the pool reduces the load on all other filtration equipment..
  • Healthier water - In chlorinated systems oxidation by free radicals reduces production of toxic disinfection by-products such as trichloramine, chloroform and cyanogen chloride.
  • High efficiency - ACO® extends the half-life of chlorine and peroxide by over 300 %, giving you substantial chemical savings
  • no pinniped eye irritation → no cetacean pulmonary irritation → no walrus skin irritation.

How does ACO® work?

Short-wavelength, energy-intensive ultra-violet rays from the sun are converted by ACO® into longer wavelengths. When this energy is released it splits water molecules producing free radicals (hydroxyl radicals and oxygen radicals). These are even more powerful than ozone and can oxidise organic pollutants such as urea and organochloramines completely back to carbon dioxide (CO2), water (H2O) and nitrogen (N2) so, no harmful disinfection by-products, just clean safe water and no trichloramines in chlorinated systems.

What is APF?

APF® is a multi-spectrum coagulant and flocculant that removes pollutants from solution and flocculates fine suspended solids, such as skin cells and bacteria, into large particles that are easily removed by AFM® (Activated Filter Media).
No single flocculant or coagulant can remove everything from the water. APF® is a precise combination of 6 different electrolytes and polyelectrolytes to cover the widest possible range.
Dissolved constituents of water make up 80 % of the oxidation demand and suspended solids around 20%. Everything that is filtered out does not need to be oxidised.
When the correct flocculation is used in combination with AFM®, oxidation demand is reduced and RedOx potential increases. In chlorinated systems unwanted disinfection by-products are reduced by up to 80 %.

Your benefits at a glance:

  • For sanitary security
APF® is required to optimise removal of bacteria, parasites such as Cryptosporidiium, Giardia and Mycobacterial parasites (Candida, Aspergillus etc).
  • Economic and environmental
Improved filtration reduces oxidation demand by up to 80 %. It also means there will be fewer disinfection by-products formed. Operating costs will be lower and there will be less of an impact on the environment.
  • For chlorine-free treatment in biological systems
APF® is an important aid in chlorine-free water treatment of aquatic mammal LSS in combination with AFM® filtration.

What is coagulation and flocculation?

Coagulation; is the process of dragging chemicals out of solution to form colloidal suspensions of small particles. In order to make coagulation work, APF® must be mixed instantly and aggressively with the water, this is why we designed the ZPM. If a ZPM is not used, the coagulation stage is missed, organics will remain in solution and APF® jumps to flocculation.

Flocculation; is the process of bringing colloidal suspensions of small particles (organic detritus, bacteria and parasites) together to form larger flocs that can be easily removed by AFM®.
APF® imparts a positive charge to particles that are then attracted to the negatively charge surface of AFM®. Flocculation takes several minutes and the particle floc is very fragile, so the water must not be subjected to aggressive agitation.

What is NoPhos?

Unicellular algae and bacteria need phosphates to transport nutrients across their cell membranes. In the absence of phosphates they cannot metabolise any nutrients that are present in the water.

NoPhos removes phosphates that enter the system from make-up water supply, from animal feed and from wind blown debris. Phosphates are fertilisers and if controlled, algal and bacterial growth can be managed. If phosphates are removed they will starve and algae/bacteria are eliminated over a period of about six weeks.

NoPhos is a natural product that can be safely used in living systems. It is widely used in aquaria and mammal systems around the world including use for management of phosphates in living coral culture. Dryden Aqua’s knowledge as marine biologists ensures the purity and consistency of chemical content that determines its suitability for aquarium use.

NoPhos uses Lanthanum, a charged ion which reacts with phosphate to form an insoluble precipitate that is removed by AFM®, or it forms an inert deposit on the bottom of the pool that is easily removed.

Your benefits at a glance:

  • Eliminates phosphates
    Prevents algae and bacterial growth
  • Is a natural product
Can be used in marine mammal LSS as well as in fish and invertebrate systems. Non-toxic and guaranteed pure!
  • Is a coagulant
It improves the filtration performance of both AFM® and sand filters.

Phosphate target levels & analyses

  •  In mammal LSS the objective should be total elimination of phosphates.
  • In biological systems phosphate levels should be controlled to between 0.05 and 0.1mg/l.

Phosphates can be analysed using a simple spectrophotometer with appropriate reagents. Analyses will measure only phosphates in solution and not those bound up in organic matter. The actual level of phosphates will therefore always be greater than measured levels and continuous low level dosage will normally be needed.
